What will happen to the proposals for the withdrawal of 2nd pension pillar savings?

In the 22 April episode of “Kas notiek Latvijā?'' (What’s Happening in Latvia?), participants discussed proposals that would allow residents to withdraw their 2nd pillar pension savings before reaching retirement age.

Proposals have been submitted both on the Manabalss.lv platform and in the Saeima to allow people to withdraw the money accumulated in the 2nd pension pillar before reaching retirement age. So far, all such proposals have been rejected by the Saeima, but the discussions have not ended.

Now, the Ministry of Welfare has also raised the possibility of considering an option that would allow individuals to withdraw these savings in order to use the funds for healthcare expenses. However, experts continue to point out that such action could expose people to the risk of poverty in the future.

The discussion explored possible solutions, including the use of pension savings for healthcare needs, as well as the related risks to long-term financial security.

Among the discussion participants was also @Edgars Voļskis, Doctor of Economics and Head of Advisory at BDO, sharing his expert perspective on issues related to financial security.
