BDO Young Artist Award 2025 received by artist Elizabete Andersone

On March 26, the sixth BDO Young Artist Award ceremony took place at the PILOT experimental art space of the Art Academy of Latvia. The main prize was awarded to emerging artist Elizabete Andersone for her work ‘’Ode to the Unseen’’, accompanied by a cash prize of EUR 2,000. For the second time in the award’s history, a Viewers’ Choice Award was also presented. Selected by exhibition visitors and readers of the Satori online platform, the award was received by artist Baiba Čadore for her work ‘’Knots of Unfulfilled Dreams’’.

Now in its sixth consecutive year, the BDO Young Artist Award aims to promote the recognition, evaluation, and development of young artists, while contributing to the growth of art and culture in Latvian society.

Elizabete Andersone (b. 2000) is an emerging artist from Riga, Latvia, and a graduate of the Visual Communication Department at the Art Academy of Latvia (BA, MA). Her work explores the periphery of perception, spatial structures, and mechanisms of memory. Through installation art, she combines light, sound, and scenographic strategies to highlight elements often overlooked in everyday life - such as background noise, spatial awareness, and bodily responses.

“Receiving this award was a great surprise, as all the finalists presented very strong applications. I am delighted that two years of dedicated effort during my master’s studies have culminated in an installation that has been so highly appreciated. My sincere thanks to the jury, BDO, and the Art Academy of Latvia,” Elizabete commented.
The Viewers’ Choice Award winner, Baiba Čadore, received the majority of votes both from exhibition visitors and in the Satori online poll. Her work, ‘’Knots of Unfulfilled Dreams’’, is a large-scale mixed-media textile installation created from durable, recycled ship ropes and cords sourced from ports. These materials - used, unravelled, and transformed - form a dynamic, crocheted knot structure, where each knot becomes an integral part of the overall system.

Baiba Čadore (b. 1980) has a longstanding passion for textiles, from fibre to materiality, which is central to her creative practice. Her professional background began in clothing modelling and construction, followed by studies in housekeeping, applied arts, and design. In 2025, she graduated from the Visual Plastic Arts Department of the Art Academy of Latvia with a Master’s degree in Textile Art.

This year, four additional graduates of the Art Academy of Latvia’s 2025 Master’s programme were nominated as finalists: Katrīna Biksone (I’m leaving, I’ll be there in the evening), Armands Andže (Fear of the Landscape), Laura Aizporiete (The Encircled Room: Waiting and Latency), and Kristers Krūms (Friends’ Box).

This year’s jury included: Vita Liberte, Chairman of the Board, and Jānis Zelmenis, Council Member of BDO Latvia; Kristaps Zariņš, Rector, and Antra Priede, Vice-dean of the Art Academy of Latvia; Evita Goze, Executive Director of KIM? Contemporary Art Centre; as well as Liene Rumpe, winner of the BDO Young Artists Award 2022 and representative of DOM Gallery.
